News: Government commits to protect UK farmers from low standard imports in future trade deals

Environment Secretary Theresa Villiers came under pressure about trade and standards at this year’s Oxford Farming Conference. She was part of the opening session and as Charlotte Smith from BBC Radio 4’s Farming Today put it in her broadcast on 8 January “I think it’s fair to say that the panel put her under some pressure”.

New Bill introduced to ensure farmers continue to receive Direct Payments for the 2020 scheme year. The legislation is intended to provide stability for farmers ahead of future reforms in the forthcoming Agriculture Bill which will provide a new system of farm support outside the EU, where farmers are rewarded for enhancing the environment.
