News: Decades of hard-fought public health gains may be set back if the TTIP is not negotiated in a way that protects social safeguards and health

The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) was one of the main topics covered during the European Public Health Association’s (EHPA) September conference. A report from the event highlights the European public health community’s concern that decades of hard-fought public health gains may be set back if the TTIP is not negotiated in a way that protects social safeguards and health – specifically in regard to technical barriers to trade, intellectual property rights and drug patenting, and challenges to the way that the EU and Member States regulate on food safety, chemicals, alcohol and public services.

News: Taxes on high sugar, salt and fat products such as soft drinks, and sweet and salty foodstuffs do work

This is according to the newly-published study ‘Food taxes and their impact on competitiveness in the agri-food sector’, which was commissioned by the Directorate General for Enterprise and Industry. The study also found limited effect on cross-border shopping, including in Denmark after it introduced its saturated fat tax, which the European Heart Network noted in a statement is contrary to the often repeated statements made by the food industry. However, the research found that consumers may instead purchase similar non-taxed or less-heavily taxed items, buy cheaper brands of the taxed products or other products with similar levels of sugar, salt or fat to those that are taxed. The report also concluded that while taxes lead to an increase in administrative burden, the exact impact on profitability, employment and investment needs to be further explored.
