News: The European Commission has spoken out in favour of small food companies

And it has adopted a communication encouraging Member States to look for ways to improve protection of small food producers and retailers against the unfair practices of their trading partners, which include: refusing to put essential terms and conditions in writing; making changes to the cost of transactions that have already been agreed; leaving the weaker parties in a contract with a disproportionate amount of risk; and ending a commercial relationship without notice and without an objectively justifiable reason.

News: Extending the storage time of eggs - in domestic or retail settings - would increase Salmonella food poisoning risks to consumers

This is according to a scientific opinion from The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Salmonella Enteritidis causes the highest number of egg-borne outbreaks in the EU, and extending the sell-by date from 21 to 28 days would mean an increase in the risk of infections of 40 per cent for uncooked and 50 per cent for slightly-cooked eggs.

News: EFSA has been consulting on its 'Open EFSA' discussion paper

The paper sets out a conceptual framework, step-by-step methodology and a plan for improving its openness and transparency over the next five years. The Open EFSA initiative will follow three key steps: by the end of 2014, EFSA will finalise a list of possible actions which will be subjected to a cost/benefit analysis; from 2015, as each cost/benefit analysis is completed EFSA will develop a plan to prioritise each action ; and from 2016 onwards, EFSA will roll out the actions.

News: EFSA has rejected a French attempt to ban GMO corn

In a statement it said that following an evaluation requested by the Commission, it has concluded there is no specific scientific evidence, in terms of risk to human and animal health or the environment, that would support the adoption of an emergency measure on the cultivation of maize MON 810.

News: New guidance from EFSA's Scientific Committee has been introduced, to improve transparency in relation to data, methods and assumptions used in the Authority's scientific assessments

The document updates guidance from 2003 and aims to further harmonise the structure and content of opinions of EFSA’s Scientific Committee and Panels, by reinforcing the application of scientifically-accepted standards of best practice across all EFSA opinions and strengthening the requirement that uncertainty and variability are addressed and quantified, clearly and transparently. The new structure will be piloted over the next year and further refined in 2015, before full implementation.

News: The sale of sugary drinks will be banned from YMCAs in Victoria as part of a new healthy food and beverage policy

An estimated 350,000 cans of soft drink are sold through its recreation centres each year. The Healthy Food and Beverage Policy will be implemented over three years in over 150 locations including community recreation centres, residential camps, youth services, disability services and children services.

News: Healthy food policies to promote childhood health and reduce obesity in New Zealand are lacking

This is according to an assessment of policy priorities by a panel of more than 50 of the country’s public health professionals, medical practitioners and NGO leaders. The panel reviewed all the evidence on recent government actions and rated the degree of implementation compared to international benchmarks, in what is being described as the first systematic study on national food policies in the world. The report was part of work by the INFORMAS network to develop the first Healthy Food Environment Policy Index (Food-EPI).
