News: First Horsemeat Prosecution

The Food Standards Agency have welcomed sentencing in first prosecution relating to the 2013 horsemeat scandal. A slaughterhouse owner from West Yorkshire was fined £8,000 plus legal costs for failing to comply with food traceability regulations. A slaughterhouse manager was given a four-month suspended sentence for falsifying an invoice. The FSA have set up a Food Crime Unit to prevent and prosecute food fraud.

News: Fabian Report on Food and Poverty: A Recipe for Inequality

The Fabian Commission on Food and Poverty have released an interim report showing UK's low income households are being pushed towards a food crisis. The Commission finds that while most of the population have access to better diets, those on low incomes are being left behind. The report shows that some low income families are spending over a third of their budget on food. The Commission argued this squeeze on budgets led low income families to less nutritious diets higher in fat, salt and sugar. In addition the report found that child obesity is rising in low income households, with those on lower incomes one and a half times more likely to get diabetes than those on higher incomes.

News: Food businesses offered free online sustainable assessment tool

F3, the local food consultants are offering food businesses a free online self assessment tool. The 'Sustainable Business Review' helps food enterprises identify how they meet sustainability criteria. F3 hope businesses will take advantage of the new tool and use it to help them market their products more successfully.

News: Scottish Food Commission Announced

In a bid to improve diet related ill health, the Scottish Food Secretary Richard Lochhead has announced the 16 members of the new Scottish Food Commission. Scotland has one of the poorest diet-related health records in the world. The Food Commission, set up in the wake of the Good Food Nation report and consultation, hopes to help reverse this. The chair has been announced as former head chef Shirley Spear who will be working with industry, education and public health experts to improve the country's attitude to food. News: CASH launches National Salt Awareness Week 2015

Consensus Action on Salt and Health have published a new study showing that children's meals in 'family friendly' restaurants still contain worryingly high levels of salt. CASH urged families to cut down on the amount of salt they eat since dietary habits in childhood can influence eating patterns later in life. CASH said the latest figures from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey show children aged 4-18 years are currently consuming more salt than the recommendations set by the government's Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition in 2003. News: National NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme

NHS England, Public Health England and the charity Diabetes UK are working together to reduce the number of people in England being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Research has shown that 30-60% reductions in Type 2 diabetes incidence over three years in adults at high risk can be achieved through lifestyle change programmes. These include supporting people at risk to lose weight, exercise more and eat better diets.

News: Child dental health improves - but a long way to go

The British Dental Health Foundation have cautiously welcomed results from the latest Child Dental Health Survey which shows an improvement in levels and severity of tooth decay among children. However the British Dental Health Foundation warned that many children (3 out of 10 five year olds) still start school with tooth decay - and this increases to almost one in two with visible signs of tooth decay by the age of 15.

News: Use price policies to encourage healthier diets, says WHO Europe

A new report by the World Health Organization Europe says that price policies could encourage healthier diets, by affecting the type and amount of food that consumers buy. Looking at evidence from such schemes across Europe the report concluded that taxes on sweetened drinks and subsidies on fruit and vegetables had the most potential to encourage healthier diets. News: First cities in the UK to be awarded sustainable food city status

Brighton & Hove, Cardiff, Plymouth and the London Borough of Lambeth have become the first places in the UK to be awarded Sustainable Food City status, recognising pioneering work promoting healthy and sustainable food. A rapidly growing movement is mobilising people in towns and cities across the UK transforming access to affordable and sustainable food as members of the Sustainable Food Cities Network.
