News: Hospital food is a recipe for disaster

The new guidelines are pathetic. Patients deserve so much better than plastic containers filled with sweaty cheese, dabs of marge and unidentifiable grey mush

News: WHO (Europe) proposes new nutrient profling model

The World Health Organization (WHO) has proposed a nutrient profiling tool to help European member states that wish to restrict marketing of certain foods to children. Applying the nutrient profile model to confectionery would not allow its marketing to kids. But it will be left to member states to take action, through voluntary of statutory measures, according to their preferences. Currently the lack of such an agreed EU-wide nutrient profiling model is a huge gap in existing regulation and affects the ability of countries to implement effective rules to tackle the marketing of high fat, salt, sugar food.

News: Private Members' Bill on Sugar in Food and Drink

Geraint Davies MP's Private Members' Bill on Sugar in Food and Drinks (Targets, Labelling and Advertising) is scheduled to have a Second Reading in the House of Commons. The Bill would require the Secretary of State to set targets for sugar content in food and drinks; to provide that sugar content on food and drink labelling be represented in terms of the number of teaspoonfuls of sugar; to provide for standards of information provision in advertising of food and drinks; and for connected purposes. Due to parliamentary scheduling and procedures, this is likely to be as far as the Bill gets this time. We hope that what this Bill is trying to achieve may meet with more success in the next Parliament. See Sustain's work on sugary drinks

News: Energy drinks fuel the obesity epidemic

Action on Sugar have found "excessive and worryingly high levels of added sugars" in so called ‘energy’ drinks, which are consumed inappropriately every day.    Children's Food Campaign's reaction to the findings: "Energy drinks are the Wild West of the soft drinks industry: often shockingly and unnecessarily high in sugar and caffeine, marketed heavily to older children and teenagers, using teen sports stars to promote their brands, and seemingly operating outside of the government’s public health Responsibility Deal. We call for a sugary drinks duty, which could be part of a suite of measures needed to curb the consumption of energy drinks and tackle obesity and diet-related ill health." News: New EU report reveals huge scale of antibiotic overuse in farming

A new EU report shows for the first time that farm animals account for about two thirds of all antibiotics used in 26 European countries. The joint report by the EU Food Safety Authority, the European Medicines Agency and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control showed that countries that use higher levels of some antibiotics in animals have higher levels of antibiotic resistance in certain bacteria from humans. Contact Vicki@sustainweb.org for full media release.  Sustain is part of the Alliance to Save Our Antiobiotics
