News Real Bread Campaign

Published: Monday 20 July 2026

An important strand of the Campaign's work is celebrating people behind the rise of Real Bread. As part of this, back in the very first issue of our True Loaf magazine we began an irregular series of Real Bread Hero profiles.

Who should we be shouting about? More to the point, who would you like to write about?

Not just bakers

When we talk about Real Bread Heroes, we don't just mean high street bakers. People working to put Real Bread on the table also include seed breeders / curators, farmers, flour millers, microbakers, home bakers and independent retailers.

Working for the cause more widely, there are teachers, activists / campaigners, equipment makers / suppliers, social entrepreneurs, community project leaders, writers / communicators, public sector caterers and people in all sorts of other roles, all helping to make knowledge, skills and Real Bread available and accessible to more people.

We don't necessarily just mean one person, either: your Real Bread Hero might be a whole business, organisation or project / initiative.

Ready to start writing?

Please drop a very short email to Chris Young, the Campaign's coordinator / editor / tea boy, to say who you'd like to write about and why they're your Real Bread Hero.

If you know the person already, great. If you're less sure about contacting them to ask questions / for an interview, Chris should be able to help.

The maximum word counts for True Loaf magazine features are 450 for a one page article and 900 for a double-page article. The wordcount for online-only articles is more flexible and the deadline is rolling.

But I'm not a writer

Fear not! Chris works with every contributor to ready their article for publication. From basic proofreading, through light polishing, to more substantial sub-editing, Chris is on hand to help. You will have approval on the final edit before it is published.

Varying our diet

We work hard to welcome, platform and celebrate a wide range of people. We look forward to your help casting our net more widely for our Real Bread Hero feature.
