Why have we been nominated?
London Food Link is an umbrella for many different projects working to
improve the sustainability of London's food system, and has achieved the
following:

  • Commitments from public sector institutions in London to redirect millions of pounds of spending on food to more sustainable options e.g. caged eggs to free range eggs (Good Food on the Public Plate)
  • Supporting the creation of over 550 new community food growing spaces in London - keeping on target for 2012 spaces by the end of 2012, as part of our Capital Growth programme backed by Mayor Boris Johnson.
  • Running London's only ethical eating magazine - the Jellied Eel - driving more custom to small sustainable businesses with an increased print run of 20,000 copies a quarter available free through over 80 London outlets.
  • We run Ethical Eats, a free network assisting and advising London restaurants and the catering industry about practical steps and best practice to become more sustainable, with over 800 members. We helped a group of London's restaurants to be the first to receive the Marine Stewardship Council mark for selling sustainable fish, and have assisted the set up of the Sustainable Restaurant Association.
  • We introduced fresh fruit and veg options into 15 shops in deprived areas across 6 London boroughs through our Buywell project, which is part of the Well London programme - this may be a small number of shops, but this makes a big difference for communities that everyone else has given up on.
  • We were instrumental in getting the Olympics authorities to commit to mandatory standards to serve sustainable fish and key Fairtrade products at the 2012 games.
