Grazed and still confused?

A detailed report from the Food Climate Research Network seeks to bring clarity to the much-debated question: Is grass-fed beef good or bad for the climate? The authors' answer -- after much erudite analysis -- is that on the whole, it's bad. But Sustain member the Sustainable Food Trust disagrees.

The report, Grazed and Confused? dissects claims made about so-called ‘grass-fed’ beef, the greenhouse gases the animals emit, and the possibility that, through their grazing actions, they can help remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. It attempts to evaluate these claims and counterclaims against the best available science, to provide an evidence-based answer to a question that has passionate advocates on both sides.

The report says: 'The inescapable conclusion is that while grazing livestock have their place in a sustainable food system, that place is limited.'  Read the full report here.

However, Sustain member the Sustainable Food Trust disagrees with the report's conclusions -- and disputes some of its evidence. A very thoughtful dialogue has ensued: read SFT's commentary here
