Avoid giving palm oil products to children, parents warned

After finding traces of a carcinogen, an Italian consumer group has warned parents to avoid infant formula and snack foods containing palm oil.

Earlier this year, the European Food Safety Authority published a report on the carcinogen 3-MCPD, which is found in processed vegetable oils, particularly palm oil. The EFSA reported that the average children's intake was above safe levels.

The Italian consumer group Altroconsumo has now tested 12 common children's products and found results it describes as alarming. The safety threshold for 3-MCPD could be exceeded up to 10 times for infants fed exclusively on formula, with snacks, chips and biscuits also containing worrying levels.

As a result, the group has advised parents to avoid giving their children products containing palm oil.
