EU cash boost for struggling dairy farmers

The European Commission has announced a €500 million aid package to tackle the unprecedented crisis in the EU’s dairy and livestock sectors

As Britain prepares itself for life outside the EU, UK dairy and livestock farmers will benefit from a cash boost from Europe.

€150 million will be assigned to the milk sector, in exchange for voluntary reductions in production. Another €350 million will be allocated to EU member states to address problems in other areas of livestock farming.

Dairy and livestock farmers across Europe are experiencing difficulties because of the abolition of EU production quotas in April 2015, combined with the Russian embargo and falling demand from China. Production costs now exceed the price paid to farmers in several EU countries.

This is the second significant support package the EU has agreed in recent months. The aim is to stabilise prices at a level that enables farmers to make a living.
