Health Chiefs under fire for failing to meet minimum quality standards for hospital food

Health chiefs came under renewed fire last night for failing to meet quality standards for hospital meals.

Thirty trusts in England said they complied with food guidelines. But 12 of them failed to follow rules that state half the tea and coffee served to patients should meet Fairtrade standards.

The Campaign for Better Hospital Food said: “If a third of hospitals which say they are meeting standards are failing to do so, how many are failing on nutrition?”

It also slammed the Coalition for bringing in minimum standards for its departments and jails but not hospitals.

Health Minister Dan Poulter said: “Decisions are best taken locally by chefs and catering managers.”
