LEAF promotes public engagement

Sustainable farming organisation to hold open conference on how to increase public understanding of food and farming

Encouraging a better public understanding of farming has been core to the work of Sustain member LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) for 25 years. Since 2006, it has run the Open Farm Sunday programme, which has allowed almost 2 million visitors to see farming at first hand.

LEAF now wants to expand this work, and make contact with people and organisations it has not collaborated with in the past, by holding an open conference on public engagement with farming.

Caroline Drummond, LEAF chief executive, says she wants to look at success stories from other industries: 'There are important lessons and strategies we, as a farming industry, can learn from.'

Speakers include:

  • Jon Alexander, Founding Partner at the New Citizenship Project
  • Fran Barnes, Director of Communications, National Farmers’ Union
  • Chris Manley, Agriculture Manager for Poultry, Sainsbury’s
  • Patrick Middleton, Head of Engagement, Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)
  • Ian Piggott, Chairman, Farming and Countryside Education (FACE) and LEAF Demonstration Farmer
  • Michael Winter, Professor of Land Economy and Society, University of Exeter

The free conference takes place on Monday 12 September 2016, at the Auditorium, Sainsbury’s, in London, from 10am to 4pm. Find out more or book a place here.
