  • Taps into traditional skills that have been passed down through generations

Additionally, baking at home allows you to provide nutritious and healthy Real Bread for you and your family, often at a much lower cost than commercially produced equivalents.

Disclaimer

As with everything on this site, a listing is simply that - it does not represent either an endorsement by, or recommendation from, the Real Bread Campaign.

Campaign staff have not necessarily been to a listed class/course and the descriptions have been written by the business owners themselves.

The Campaign recommends that before you book a place on any class you visit their website and/or contact the school in question for full details so you know what you can expect. You should also check with whoever is running the course for up to date information, as details might have changed since they were supplied to the Campaign.

In particular, it is up to you to check the background of the tutor. Some on the list below have 20-30 years of professional baking and teaching experience, whilst others have considerably less.

Please make sure that the tutor has the depth of knowledge, level of skill and length of experience appropriate to meet your needs and answer the questions you may have - e.g. if  you planning to set up a sourdough bakery, then your needs are quite different than if you just want confidence to bake a basic loaf at home every now and then.

Paul the Baker

Peterborough

I have been baking artisan bread for the past twenty years as a profession and as a hobby. The courses I offer are based around real sourdough bread, made with nothing more than stoneground flour, rye flour, 1% salt and dechlorinated water (and of course my starter), although yeasted bread is taught when requested. I offer bespoke breadmaking courses for both homebakers and professionals, the tailor made classes designed around the trainee, based in their own domestic or professional kitchen. A half day course is usually £45 but large discounts are available for group bookings. Gift tokens also available.

Virtuous Bread

London, various venues

Virtuous Bread dispels the myth that baking is scary, prone to failure, and hard to fit into a busy lifestyle.  Hands on classes range from four hours for a basic bread class or eight hours for a sourdough class. From time to time we also give four hour classes in seasonal and celebration bread such as hot cross buns, all souls day and epiphany bread, challah, brioche, or wedding bread!  In addition to tea, coffee, lunch, and chat you always have lots of bread to take home.

Virtuous Bread also runs the Bread Angel course which teaches people to set up and run their own business baking bread at home and supplying it in their local neighbourhood.  It is such a clear and important win win:  Bakers make money and build their local communities both spiritually and physically by making connections through good bread.  The Bread Angel course is three classes of four hours over three weeks during which you learn to bake different kinds of bread, to market and sell your bread, and to set up and run your business.
