Over one and a half days I will show you five essential things in order to make well structured flavoursome, crusty sourdough bread: the ingredients; how to create, maintain and use a leaven; how to make a well developed dough; hand skills for shaping; how to bake your bread. By doing this I will show you how to follow a natural process and to use your own senses to know when something is ready or right. In this way you should – with experience - be able to adapt the process to your life and make sourdough bread regularly. Because the class will be held in our own domestic kitchen you should be able to reproduce at home what you learn here. Price £95 per person. Please contact the B&B for course dates.

I have been baking artisan bread for the past twenty years as a profession and as a hobby. The courses I offer are based around real sourdough bread, made with nothing more than stoneground flour, rye flour, 1% salt and dechlorinated water (and of course my starter), although yeasted bread is taught when requested. I offer bespoke breadmaking courses for both homebakers and professionals, the tailor made classes designed around the trainee, based in their own domestic or professional kitchen. A half day course is usually £45 but large discounts are available for group bookings. Gift tokens also available.

Virtuous Bread dispels the myth that baking is scary, prone to failure, and hard to fit into a busy lifestyle. Hands on classes range from four hours for a basic bread class or eight hours for a sourdough class. From time to time we also give four hour classes in seasonal and celebration bread such as hot cross buns, all souls day and epiphany bread, challah, brioche, or wedding bread! After two years of supplying local residents with freshly baked bread at the Spetisbury Trading Post, Jo Edmond has taken to running very popular half-day bread making courses at Spetisbury Village Hall.
There's a basic bread course and an Italian bread course (with other cuisines in the pipeline); informal and fun (and, of course, very much 'hands on'), they run either side of lunch on Saturdays monthly and weekday classes are being trialled during 2013. Course fees are between £35 and £40 (depending on course content and day of course). This is definitely a 'cost effective' approach to bread making - with the emphasis on fun, good food (lunch is included in the price!) and friendship. Classes book up very quickly...

Forest of Dean
Dede Liss's monthly Slow Bread Making Courses are set in the beautiful Forest of Dean. Slow bread uses traditional bread making methods allowing the bread to develop flavour and texture. The courses cover basic bread making where you will learn about the processes involved, about different flours, yeast, and how to get delicious, great, bread. Dede has developed a Slow Bread course using the traditional long fermentation method. It is for all people who love really good artisan bread.
Whether you are a beginner in bread making or have already had a go, you will get a hands on experience and a thorough understanding of the bread making process. The long fermentation method creates a bread that is tastier, keeps longer and perhaps is more digestible. Join in a fun day, go home with bread, easy to follow recipes, and the confidence to continue making delicious bread at home. With a lovely organic homemade lunch as part of the experience. The aim is for you to go home with confidence, skills and the bread making bug to carry on baking.
