A fairer deal for farmers

The European Commission has launched a public consultation on how to strengthen the bargaining power of farmers, who are being squeezed by the bigger, better-resourced manufacturers and retailers who buy their produce.

The consultation, which runs until 17 November, is looking for views on the nature of the relationship between farmers and their corporate customers.

Specifically, it is asking about:
  • Unfair Trading Practices (such as not providing written contracts, or unilaterally changing or voiding contractual commitments at the last minute);
  • market transparency (by which the Commission means how easy it is to see where the money is going along supply chains);
  • and the ease with which growers can cooperate or form collectives (which can sometimes bring them into conflict with Competition regulations).
