The European Commission has launched a public consultation on how to strengthen the bargaining power of farmers, who are being squeezed by the bigger, better-resourced manufacturers and retailers who buy their produce.
- Unfair Trading Practices (such as not providing written contracts, or unilaterally changing or voiding contractual commitments at the last minute);
- market transparency (by which the Commission means how easy it is to see where the money is going along supply chains);
- and the ease with which growers can cooperate or form collectives (which can sometimes bring them into conflict with Competition regulations).
