Animal sentience will no longer be recognised: official

The recognition that farm animals are sentient beings was a hard-won battle for Sustain member Compassion in World Farming, and has formed the basis of EU-wide animal welfare rules ever since. Following questions from CIWF, the government has now confirmed that the recognition will not be carried over into UK law post-Brexit.

In a letter to the charity, Lord Gardiner, Defra Under Secretary of State, wrote, 'This obligation will not be preserved by the EU (Withdrawal Bill), which delivers our promise to end the supremacy of EU law in the UK.'
