China is speeding the introduction of the country’s first ever comprehensive animal welfare legislation, having worked closely with Sustain member the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ international advocacy team.
The commitment was made at China’s largest conference to date on farm animal welfare. Co-sponsored by the RSPCA, the World Conference on Farm Animal Welfare took place in Hangzhou, China on 12-13 October.
Writing on their website the RSPCA said that this was the culmination of many years of working closely with Chinese academics and officials,
“Twelve years ago, the term ‘animal welfare’ was hardly understood in China and this triggered us to launch a long-term programme of strategic advocacy for farm animals in the country.”
