Application to conduct field trial of GM wheat

Researchers at Rothamsted have applied for a licence to carry out a field trial of a genetically modified wheat crop in Hertfordshire. If Defra grants permission, it will be the second ongoing GM field trial in the UK.

The trial will test whether the genetically modified (GM) wheat plants are able to carry out photosynthesis more efficiently in the field and whether this trait could result in a higher yielding crop. The wheat has been modified to convert sunlight into chemical energy (photosynthesis) more efficiently, boosting growth.

If permission is granted, it may indicate a softening of opposition to outdoor GM trials.
