Co-op puts British farmers in its freezers

The Co-op will be the first retailer to sell 100% British meat in both fresh and own-brand frozen meat products.

The Co-op is backing British farmers by ensuring that by 2018 all its own-brand frozen meat products -- from sausages and pork pies to chicken masala and ready meals -- will be sourced from British farms. The decision follows an earlier announcement that the Co-op will henceforth sell only British fresh meat, having discontinued the sale of New Zealand lamb and Danish bacon.

The retailer told Foodmanufacture magazine (here) that it also plans to give British suppliers longer contracts, to reflect the natural production cycles farmers work with and to provide them with some security in the market. It will be spending £2.5 billion on British products over the next three years.
