This spring, Real Bread Campaign supporter Ratton Pantry will launch MillPack, a new specialist flour packing service for smaller mills.
MillPack has been designed to support small businesses and to help home bakers who want high quality ingredients from artisan producers, as additive-free alternatives to commodity (or other ‘fortified’) flour.
The MillPack service is aimed at small-scale millers who don’t have packing facilities. It is also an option for those who are overburdened by scooping flour into 1kg / 1.5kg retail bags by hand, but don’t produce enough to work with a larger packing company.
Ratton Panty founder Sean Hammett says: ‘Smaller retail bags can be a very effective way to reach a broader audience, build brand awareness and achieve better margins per kilo than selling at trade prices. From the perspective of many homebakers, smaller bags are more convenient than finding somewhere to store huge, heavy sacks of flour.’
A mill sends its flour to MillPack in 25kg sacks or one-tonne bulk bags. The flour is then repacked into white-label (or custom-branded) retail bags, sealed, batch coded and labelled with the ingredient and date. The bags are then boxed or palleted and returned to the mill.
Ratton Pantry will also be able to offer some mills a route to market by selling retail bags of flour through its online store, so taking care of the tech, plus a chunk of the admin and marketing.
The project is due to launch in late spring 2026, ahead of which the Ratton Pantry / MillPack team are ready to start conversations with millers who might be interested in using the service. To find out more information and ask questions, you can email Sean or call him on 01323 379719
Looking for a miller?
The two services being offered by Ratton Pantry / MillPack are packaging and stocking online. The company doesn't have the facilities to mill flour. If you are growing grain and looking to set up / work with a local, small mill, we suggest you get in touch with one of the UK's regional grain networks for contacts and advice. You could also try The Tradiotional Cornmillers Guild.
