Fruit sector faces labour crisis

Survey data shows that many growers are finding it hard to recruit seasonal labour, and some are not confident they will have enough workers to harvest their crops.

The UK fruit and vegetable sector is dependent on migrant labour, with an estimated 80,000 seasonal workers picking and processing British produce. Now, a combination of the weak pound and the uncertainty caused by Brexit has threatened the labour supply. Growers called for a permit scheme to be re-instated, but warned that it would have to be put in place as soon as possible, given that labour needs to be recruited six months in advance of harvest.
