Children's Food Campaign welcomes spotlight on high salt children's meals

Children's Food Campaign response to CASH survey of salt levels on children's menus

Responding to CASH's survey of restaurants which found dangerously high levels in salt in kids' meals, Malcolm Clark, co-ordinator of the Children's Food Campaign, said:

"Choice and responsibility go hand-in-hand, and it's time for the catering sector to provide more of both. Restaurants should never be offering options on their menu which exceed a child's daily salt intake. Indeed, they should be aiming to reduce the salt levels in all of their dishes. At the same time, restaurants should be making it easier for parents to choose healthy options for their children, by providing more and clearer nutritional information.

Eating out should be a treat for all the family. Children should be offered the nutritious, tasty meals they deserve and not given meals packed with salt. If the catering sector is unable to do this on a voluntary basis, then the government must regulate to protect our children's health."

Children's Food Campaign: Better food and food teaching for children in schools, and protection of children from junk food marketing are the aims of Sustain's high-profile Children's Food Campaign. We also want clear food labelling that can be understood by everyone, including children.
