Steps towards more sustainable dairy farming

A new report presents practical measures to help the intensive dairy sector adopt less environmentally damaging practices

The report starts from the idea that the natural resources the dairy industry depends on form a sum of 'natural capital' which must be preserved. It evaluates existing approaches and highlights practical management interventions that could, if adopted at scale, help halt the degradation of water, biodiversity and soil, and deliver benefits to farmers and the public. The report is the result of a collaboration between Cambridge University's Institute for Sustainable Leadership and six large companies affected by or dependent on the dairy sector: Anglian Water, cheese manufacturers Glanbia and Lactalis, manufacturer Nestle, dairy ingredients company Volac, and agricultural inputs firm Yara. It recognises that all of them have an interest in using resources more sustainably, and aims to turn vague commitments to a more resilient industry into practical actions.
