Where to get Real Bread: April 2026

Your main two ways* of being able to enjoy delicious, nutritious Real Bread are to buy it or BIY (bake it yourself).

*if you're lucky, your other options might include a public sector meal (e.g. school, nursery, hospital or care home) or someone else making it for you.

BIY

Whether by hand or dragging out an under-used machine, making your own Real Bread is simple, doesn’t take much of your time and (because you don’t have a small bakery’s staff costs, overheads etc.) is very affordable.

We have tips and around 100 free recipes on our website, which is also where you can buy our Real Bread books.

Buy it

Our Real Bread Map enables you to search for places to buy Real Bread (by our definition) from bakeries that have added their details to it.

We invite every bakery in the world that makes at least one type of Real Bread to create a free listing. If your local bakery is missing, please pass on our invitation to them!

Look for The Loaf Mark!

While you’re out and about, keep your eyes peeled for The Real Bread Loaf Mark and The Sourdough Loaf Mark. There are currently more than 200 bakeries licensed to use The Loaf Mark - see below.

Notes

The Loaf Mark is not an award, accreditation, membership scheme or certification. It is a visual aid created by the Real Bread Campaign to help each bakery give its own (rather than the Campaign's) at-a-glance assurance to shoppers that a particular product is Real Bread, or genuine sourdough bread specifically.

We urge all bakeries / retailers to display full ingredients lists (on packaging, labels or point of sale signage), even when not legally required to do so.

Some licensees only make Real Bread. Others also produce products that fall outside the Campaign’s definition, so agree not to use The Loaf Mark to market them. Some bakeries' products are only available from one site, others from multiple locations.

The scheme is open to all types and sizes of bakery, though very few national brands have signed up and not one supermarket chain ever has.
