Article 50 triggered, with plans for Great Repeal Bill
As has been widely reported, at the end of March the Government triggered 'Article 50', the legal mechanism that begins the UK's exit from the EU. The Government also published details of the Great Repeal Bill that will transpose EU law into UK law, and a plan setting out its negotiating objectives.
The Government says the purpose of the Great Repeal Bill is 'ensuring a functioning statute book once the UK has left the European Union' - which is obviously important, but doesn't say anything about what the content of the statutes might be. Nevertheless, the White Paper provides some clarity on the scope of the negotiations that lie ahead. Negotiators from Britain and the EU, lobbyists from many sectors, and campaign groups will now work against the clock to try to secure their respective visions of the best post-Brexit settlement within the appointed two-year timeframe.
Sustain is coordinating work by many food-related groups on this subject: find out more here. Read the White Paper here, and see the Government's Plan for Britain, including its 12 negotiating objectives, here.
We will also publish responses from other organisations, where these have relevance to food, fishing and farming.
