We’re fed up with our shelves being flooded with unhealthy food. Are you?

Recipe for Change has launched a co-developed citizens' charter calling for healthier, more affordable food for everyone. Campaign intern Nésa Depeza Njie reflects on two weeks of growing momentum, and why we need your voice now to show Government the scale of support behind these calls.

It’s been just over two weeks since the launch of Recipe for Change’s new public campaign ‘We’re Fed Up’, calling on the government to stand up to big food companies and put our health first. The campaign has been featured across the media, including in The Grocer, and has attracted support from influential figures in health such as GP and public figure Dr Amos Ogunkoya, and food policy expert Gavin Wren. The number of supporters is growing, but we want to grow that number further ahead of delivering the charter to Downing Street in the autumn, and show just how much the public wants to see change.

Why does this matter?

Our food landscape is flooded with food which is high in saturated fat, salt and sugar (HFSS). 7 out of 10 food items from Britain’s biggest producers are ultra-processed. And unhealthy foods take centre stage when it comes to advertising.

"When I walk out of my estate, it’s probably 30 to 45 minutes before I see any fruit or veg advertised… before you get to that, you’re going past all the cafes, restaurants and takeaways."

We are bombarded with billboards, bus stop signage, flyers, pop-up videos and more on a day-to-day basis. For every £1 spent on fruit and veg advertising, £18 is spent on confectionery, snacks, desserts and soft drinks. The proof is in the pudding: we are seeing more of these unhealthy foods because more money is being put into the marketing behind them.

Children are also a key target - with Paw Patrol and Peppa Pig being some of the main characters featured on less healthy children’s food, it’s no wonder 95% of children are eating too much sugar.

What now?

Citizens across the UK are calling on government and industry to:

  1. Make our food healthier, more affordable and accessible, no matter where we live
  2. Hold food companies accountable for improving our health, not undermining it
  3. Protect our children from harmful food marketing
  4. Give us clear, honest information that we can trust
  5. Put us and our communities at the heart of decisions about our local food system
  6. Create welcoming community spaces where we can all access and share healthy food

These calls have been backed up by national polling by YouGov: 84% of the British public think food companies should be doing more to make a balanced diet affordable and 71% think they should be doing more to make it readily available.

People want a change; we are fed up with a food system that is working against us. Public support for change is clear, but we need more voices.
