When you buy eggs to use at home, you can be confident they didn't come from hens confined to tiny cages. It's much harder to be sure about the eggs used in cafe cakes and sandwiches.

Compassion in World Farming has come up with a nifty way to check which brands use caged eggs. Their 'virtual highstreet' allows you to click on the names of cafe and restaurant chains, to find out whether they use cruelty-free eggs, either as a whole eggs or as ingredients. So EAT, for example, gets two red crosses, whereas McDonalds gets two green ticks, and Starbucks gets a tick and a cross.
CIWF wants all brands to make a public commitment to get rid of all caged eggs on their menus – including any ‘hidden’ caged egg ingredients, such as those lurking in their cakes and pasta.
