This issue comes to you thanks to a wave of people who responded to my email plea for articles back in July 2026.* Appropriately, the result is a collection of pieces that include a fair smattering of ones focussed on community.

In the Veneto region of Italy, Nathan Cal Danby and Amalia Sacchi are settling in as the neighbourhood’s bakers; while Maureen Breeze is bringing people together in west England to discover and share baking knowledge together. In Sussex, Charlotte Vrinten goes behind the counter of a bakery that offers people more than ‘just’ Real Bread.

Not everyone involved in the rise of Real Bread is a baker: Wendy Barrie writes of seed saving in Scotland; and in Connecticut, USA, Alex Ricciardi nominates a baking equipment maker as a Real Bread Hero. On the subject of kit, Peter Garner remembers a bakery equipment engineer – his father; while Sofia Gallo delves into the history books to serve up northern English clapcakes.

As our supporters have a wide range of backgrounds, identities and interests, I continue working to publish articles on a mix of subjects. If you there’s something, or someone, associated with Real Bread that you’d like to write about, please email me.

Happy baking,

Chris Young
(True Loaf editor)
