World Day for Decent Work

Activities have been taking place  around the world to assert workers' rights to a decent livelihood and social protections

In the daily churn of news stories, World Day for Decent Work (7 October) did not attract much attention. Credit, then, to Sustain member War on Want for flagging it up.

Now in its third year, the day has particular significance for food workers, both in the UK and in supplier countries, who are among the worst paid and most precarious workers anywhere. The principles of decent work include a living wage, fair working conditions and the right to join a trade union.

War on Want has been campaigning in support of the decent work agenda for many years. In the UK, its supermarkets campaign continues to build a movement in solidarity with overseas workers in sweatshops and plantations supplying the UK market.
