Most European food meets rules on residues

The European Food Safety Authority's annual analysis finds EU foods to be largely free of residues -- with foods imported from outside the EU more likely to be contaminated.

Ninety-seven per cent of food samples tested in the European Union in 2014 were either free of pesticide residues or contained traces that were within legal limits. The analysis found that 54% of samples were free of  'quantifiable residues'.

However, 6.5% of food imports from third countries contained pesticide residues that exceeded  the EU’s maximum permitted level.

The conclusions are part of the European Food Safety Authority's latest annual report on pesticide residues in food, which analyzed the results of almost 83,000 food samples from the 28 EU Member States – including Croatia for the first time – as well as Iceland and Norway.
