Did you know that you could be eating eggs, milk, dairy products, poultry, red meat and farmed fish from animals that have been fed on genetically modified (GM) soya and/or maize?

While GM ingredients have to be labelled, the law does not require this of products from GM-fed animals and so shoppers are being kept in the dark. Sustain alliance member GM Freeze is now shining a light on supermarkets selling products from GM-fed animals.

Feed Me The Truth is their new campaign that targets the UK’s top ten supermarkets, urging them to offer 100% GM free options (in addition to the already GM free certified organic food) and calling for transparent labelling of all other own brand products.

GM Freeze director Liz O’Neill explains: “It has taken experienced campaigners weeks of correspondence to get a straight answer out of some of the supermarkets and in most cases that answer is that GM feed is being used across the board. Consumers who want to choose food produced responsibly, fairly and sustainably don’t stand a chance.”

Feed Me The Truth awards points to supermarkets for clear labelling and their commitment to addressing the issue of GM.

Liz O’Neill adds: “The GM crops being fed to our farm animals are grown in ways that harm people, animals and the environment. These crops aren’t allowed to be grown in the UK and many people don’t want anything to do with them.

If you agree that your supermarket should feed you the truth, visit the GM Freeze website for more details and how to get involved.
