A new report in The Lancet warns that more than 6,000 deaths a year could be caused by a 30% fall in the effectiveness of antibiotics in the US.
UK experts said the report confirmed their fears that antibiotic resistance will effect patients recovering from routine operations. The report estimated that in the US, between 38.7% and 50.9% of pathogens that cause infections after surgery are resistant to antibiotics.
