Keeping up with China's appetite

An English-Chinese website that tracks China's struggle to make its food and farming practices more sustainable has launched an investigation into the fishing industry.

China looms large in many discussions about the food supply. Given its scale, and its population's changing diet, it is already the the largest producer, consumer and / or  trader of many foods. Its agricultural and environmental practices -- for better or worse -- have far-reaching consequences.

The website ChinaDialogue, published in English and Chinese, is a useful resource for keeping track of China's activities in the food and environmental sphere. It has recently launched a two-year series of articles that will explore the challenges facing global fisheries and marine environments, and China’s role in tackling them. Current items include features on vegetarian fishmeal (because China farms more fish than all other countries combined), and on the unsustainable practices that beset the Chinese tilapia sector.
