In the UK, 4000 growers produce around 9 million tonnes of fruit and veg every year, consisting of more than 300 types of fruit, vegetable and potato, contributing around £3bn to UK GDP and employing tens of thousands of workers.
But despite all the evidence that increasing consumption of vegetables and fruit boosts health, fruit purchases have fallen by 14% since 2007, vegetables by 5% and fresh potatoes by 20%.
In a
new report, the National Farmers Union tackles this contradiction by suggesting how farmers, retailers, food service operators and government can work together to improve supply and also enhance 'the architecture of choice' so that consumers are more likely to choose British-grown fruit, vegetables and potatoes more often.
