UK warned it will have to concede 'everything' for a trade deal with the US

As Donald Trump's language becomes increasingly bellicose about possible steel trade wars, the UK has been warned it will have to concede 'everything' in order to secure a trade deal.

The Scotsman reported this weekend that US policy experts have warned that the UK will become a 'guinea pig' for a 'harsh' new US trade policy. This comes as Donald Trump has tweeted about EU trade tariffs and regulations being 'unfair' to American farmers.

Dr Tom Wright from the Brookings Institution said "the US had maximum leverage” in any trade negotiation and would demand the UK open its market to American imports and adopt lower standards and regulations.

Other ominous signs that UK/US trade negotiations will not be beneficial for UK consumers are their lower welfare meat, an apparently less favourable 'open skies' agreement and proposed tariffs on steel.

Vicki Hird, food and farming campaign co-ordinator said: "We are demanding UK trade deals that encourage a healthy 'race to the top', upholding high safety and ethical standards for food, farming and fishing. We want them to be fair to farmers and farm workers, at home and abroad, and support healthy, decent working conditions, environmental protection and good animal welfare."
