Eating well for humans and planet

Momentum is gathering around the idea that our diets must be sustainable, not just healthy -- which means taking a complex range of factors into account. The EAT-Lancet Commission, one of the heavyweight organisations looking at this problem, now has a website and a forthcoming new journal.

The EAT-Lancet Commission on Food, Planet and Health has brought together scholars, including Sustain patron, Professor Tim Lang, and experts from the fields of food systems, ecology, health and agriculture to try to establish what constitutes a healthy, sustainable diet for humans, other life forms and the planet that sustains us all. Lack of consensus on this subject has impeded governments, businesses and civil society groups wanting to take action, so the Commission's report -- due to be published by 2018 -- is eagerly awaited. In the meantime it has launched a website, foodplanethealth.org, and the Lancet has launched a new journal, Lancet Planetary Health, which aims to increase understanding of the links between planetary and human health.

The Sustain alliance campaigns for greener, healthier and fairer food systems. Read more about our activities and support us here.
