Bristol Water joins SUGAR SMART Bristol with a splash

Bristol Water joins the SUGAR SMART Bristol Campaign this summer with free Water Bar pop ups at popular events to help residents consume less sugar and waste less plastic.

The SUGAR SMART Bristol campaign has joined forces with Bristol Water and City to Sea to relaunch the award-winning Bristol Water Bar, which will be touring popular events this summer to serve up thousands of litres of free water.

The Bristol Water Bar was a huge success in 2016 as part of Bristol Water’s work with City to Sea’s Refill Bristol campaign, serving up tens of thousands of free refills at Bristol’s flagship summer events and saving over 15,000 bottles from being discarded.

This year, the team is bringing back the Water Bar in partnership with SUGAR SMART Bristol, led by Bristol Council and the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation. This effort will tackle two key issues facing our communities – ill health caused by overconsumption of sugary drinks and litter.

Becky Pollard, Director of Public Health at Bristol City Council, said: “Working with Bristol Water on SUGAR SMART will help us to reach an even wider audience, so we’re delighted to have them on board. It is shocking that today’s children are the first generation predicted to live shorter lives than their parents because of diet and inactivity but we’re hoping to challenge that prediction in Bristol.”

Jo Ralling from the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation added: “It’s incredibly important to get the message out that drinking water is really important for long-term health. Our bodies need to be hydrated and water is an alternative to sugary sweetened drinks.”

Check out other cross-sector partnerships tackling sugar overconsumption in their cities, and join the movement by signing up to SUGAR SMART.

Sugar Smart is run by Sustain and the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation, and is this year's featured campaign of Sustainable Food Cities.
