A brave new world for livestock

A report from the Eating Better alliance urges policy makers to seize the opportunity to forge a policy for British meat and dairy that would benefit humans, animals, the climate and the environment.

Sustain member Eating Better campaigns to help people move towards eating less (but higher welfare) meat, and more foods that benefit both people and the environment. Its latest report, Beyond the CAP: policies to support better UK meat and dairy production post-Brexit, sets out recommendations for livestock’s role within a sustainable food and farming system.

Key proposals include: ditching the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and replacing it with an integrated food and farming policy; high standards on a range of issues to be retained through trade negotiations; levels of livestock production that are consistent with the carrying capacity of the land, climate change goals and sustainable diets; sustainably sourced livestock feed; and clear and honest labelling.
