PAN UK reacted with disappointment to the decision by the EC to renew the licence for glyphosate -- the world's most widely used pesticide -- after a long tussle in the EU, during which the decision was postponed several times.
However, the fact that the Commission has taken the unusual step of restricting the renewal to 18 months shows that campaigners' protests have registered, and suggests that the chemical may one day be outlawed.
PAN UK and other organisations had resisted relicensing, and had been supported by several MEPs. The World Health Organisation has ruled that glyphosate is a probable human carcinogen, and as such all use should be prohibited.
PAN also regretted that the EC's decision did not place any restrictions on the chemical's use (for example by restricting its use in public parks and streets), which would have limited public exposure.
