Conflicts of interest stop public health policies being introduced
An international report from the UK Health Forum into the collaboration of the food and drink industry with public health finds that conflict of interest repeatedly stop governments introducing measures to improve health.
The Casebook includes examples from Fiji, Brazil, Spain and Mexico. The UK Health Forum (who are observers of the Sustain alliance) examines the interaction between food and drink manufacturers and public health officials.
The research concludes that frequently conflicts of interest are cited as the principal challenge in public-private interactions to tackle diet related diseases. For example, in Fiji the former Minister of Health questioned the ethical issues of including the sugary drinks industry in the development of policies.
The report also found that governments are not learning from past experiences with the tobacco industry.
