An investigation by Compassion in World Farming in 2014 found rabbits to be the most caged animal in Europe. The organisation visited 16 factory farms in five EU countries, and found rabits confined in 'horrific' conditions in small, wire cages.
Factory-farmed rabbits spend their entire lives in battery cages: they are born in a cage and remain caged until slaughter approximately 80 days later. Breeding female rabbits are often kept in solitary confinement for two years. Rabbits are the second-most farmed animal in Europe, with more than 330 million rabbits being raised in cages.
CIWF is campaigning for legislation to end this inhuamne practice, and more than half a million people have signed up so far. Find out more here.
