Following a call for a levy on drinks with added sugar, backed by Jamie Oliver and the Childrens Food Campaign, Plaid Cmyru have been calling for the tax in Wales. Research carried out by Plaid suggests the tax could cut the number of obese people in Wales by 8,300 and those classed as overweight by 13,300
It also proposed bringing forward plans that would would allow the next Welsh government to introduce a levy on sugary drinks, using taxation powers given in the Wales Act 2014.
Elin Jones, Plaid's shadow health minister, said: "Excess sugar consumption is one of the biggest risks to public health and unless we take action the threat will continue to grow."
