A survey has found that a majority of British consumers believe farmers at home and overseas are underpaid for their products, and more than half said they would be willing to pay more if they thought prices reflected a better price and fairer wages for farmers and workers. The survey found that respondents considered protection for farmers should be a priority for the Government to focus on when looking at food production.
The Fairtrade Foundation commissioned the research from market researchers GlobeScan, to investigate whether strengthening the UK’s regulatory framework would be welcomed by the majority of UK consumers who want fairly traded, sustainable food.
The Foundation says the findings demonstrate that the British public strongly believes that both Government and business should be doing more to ensure future food sustainability.
