Animals are Not Freight Global Day of Action

How to support Compassion in World Farming's campaign to end the suffering of food animals transported for long distances

29 August is an infamous day in the cruel history of animal transport. On this day 20 years ago, 67,488 sheep burned to death or drowned when the cargo ship onto which they had been loaded exploded in flames in the Indian Ocean. It was the worst such incident on record.

But animals are transported long distances every day. For example, 30 million live sheep and cows are exported from Australia every year. According to Sustain member Compassion in World Farming (CIWF), there is no humane way to transport live animals over long distances without causing immense suffering, and no trade should be predicated on such cruelty.

CIWF is organising the first Global Day of Action to end long-distance live animal transport, on 29 August 2016. It has developed a website, available here, with many ideas to help groups or individuals plan activities, and to help people find local events.
