Entries in the Scottish Bread Championship are now being invited from Scotland-based Real Bread bakeries and home bakers.

Created, sponsored and run since 2017 by Scotland The Bread and Scottish Food Guide, the Scottish Bread Championship is the only major UK baking competition to apply the Real Bread Campaign’s ‘no additives’ criterion to all entries.

The entry form and full details (including terms, conditions and guidance) can be found on the Scottish Food Guide website. Completed forms and any comments/queries should be emailed to Wendy Barrie

Entries are open from 8 January to 12 February 2024, with products to be delivered for the judging on 23 February at Bowhouse in Fife.

Winners will be announced at The Scottish Festival of Real Bread at the same venue the following day, Saturday 24 February.

Entry categories

  • Class 1: Classic sourdough bread. Plain, genuine sourdough bread.
  • Class 2: Enriched sourdough bread. Sweet or savoury, genuine sourdough bread, with addition of seeds, fruit or other inclusions.
  • Class 3: Bread made from Scottish-grown grain, milled in Scotland.
  • Class 4: Bread reflecting Scotland’s food culture. For example, it can be made with historic grains, to a traditional Scottish recipe, or reflecting international influences on Scotland’s evolving identity.

  • Class 6: Cottage loaf, inspired by the benefits of baking at home for the family.
  • Class 7: Sourdough pastries. Sweet or savoury laminated baked goods (eg croissants, Danish pastries, rowies), leavened only using a sourdough starter.
  • Class 8: The People’s Bread, made to Scotland The Bread’s People’s Bread standard for a well-fermented loaf, made with a high proportion of locally-milled organic Scottish-grown grain, aimed at producing a nutritious, affordable and accessible bread for everybody.

A product can be entered in more than one applicable category and each entry costs £5 per category. For example, a loaf might be eligible for Classes 1 and 8 and entering it in both would cost £10.

Awards

Each entry will be tasted by a team of judges, who will give it a score out of 100 against a set of criteria for that category. If an entry scores above the relevant threshold, it will receive a Bronze, Silver or Gold award. Winners of these awards will receive certificates.

From the winners of Gold awards (except Class 7) the whole judging panel will select an overall Supreme Champion and a Reserve Champion.

Grants

The Championship is once again in receipt of sponsorship from The Edinburgh Bakers Trust, whose purpose is the advancement of baking education, arts, heritage, culture and science. This charity’s core activity is awarding small grants to bakers and other related organisations. Find out more
