Nottingham Mill Co-op is running a crowdfunding campaign to raise £18,000 by 21 September 2025 for a new community bakery and commercial kitchen at Sneinton Market Avenues.
Backers can either make a donation or pledge and select one of 15 exclusive rewards, including workshops, flour milled on site, and tickets to the launch party.
As of 10 September, the campaign had passed 60% of its target, with just 11 days to go.
The new space will help small-scale food producers and local farmers to build a thriving local food system in Nottingham. It will provide access to affordable workspace, specialist equipment and training for small-scale bakers, millers and other local food producers, all while championing locally-grown grains and sustainable growing practises.
Real Bread Campaign supporter Kimberley Bell (owner of Small Food Bakery and founding member of the Co-op and UK Grain Lab) said “We believe Nottingham deserves better flour, better food, and a food system that values people and the planet over profit.”
Funds raised will go towards buying deck and convection ovens, mixers, a fridge, a pastry sheeter and other specialist equipment. Among the first users of the new space will be local microbakeries Tied Up in Notts, I Like It Bakery and Baking with Halima.
The not-for-profit, worker co-operative was founded in 2021 by local people involved in the production of grain, flour, bread and other cereal-based foods. They work to empower small-scale food producers, providing flexible, affordable access to a rentable workspace, specialist equipment and training, as well as a supportive network of peers and mentors.
With an initial aim of bringing the dying art of milling back into the city, in 2021 Nottingham Mill Co-op crowdfunded the purchase of a modern stone mill. With overwhelming support from their local community, they established The Missing Miller as an independent business.
