Food Waste (Reduction) Bill launched

Kerry McCarthy MP for Bristol East introduced her Food Waste (Reduction) Bill in the House of commons this week.

The Bill would address the high levels of industry food waste - Kerry McCarthy said that while some excellent work was being done on waste reduction, only 2% of surplus food is redistributed by groups and organisations. Supporting the bill, Kath Dalmeny, Sustain's co-ordinator said "The Government must now recognise that voluntary schemes have failed and that industry targets must be compulsory, to give food waste reduction the priority it requires in supermarket board-room discussions, and to open the door to the wide range of solutions now available."

The Bill is also backed by Sustain members Fareshare, Feedback, and Friends of the Earth.
