Boscombe high street is going mad for vegetables

Boscombe high street in Bournemouth is being turned into a vegetable patch. From now until June 2019 different vegetable based events and activities will be going on all over Boscombe to encourage people to get growing, eating and enjoying vegetables.

The Veg Cities campaign in Boscombe is led by the Bournemouth & Poole food partnership and Bournemouth Council, and aims to get everyone eating better. The campaign will be installing raised beds on the high street and developing new growing spaces to grow vegetables, encouraging greater use of Healthy Start vouchers and delivering cookery demonstrations and workshops. The campaign will also look at helping reduce waste and redistribute surplus by promoting Boscombe’s new community fridge, celebrating vegetables as a community through Wasteless Community Meals and developing a food surplus network.

The food partnership is inviting residents to join one of the cookery demonstrations, share some great food at the Christmas Community meal or get involved with the latest social media campaigns. A dinner for two at restaurant Urban Reef will reward the best photo using a vegetable and posing as a veg superhero and using #VegPowerBoscombe on social media.

Sarah Watson manager of the Sustainable Food City Partnership said:

We are so pleased to be working with the people of Boscombe to get everyone enjoying vegetables. We hope that our campaign will really engage with everyone and improve health and wellbeing through all the activities we have planned from now until the summer. Look out for our veg batman poster as new activities and competitions will be happening all the time, and we hope to be getting businesses signed up to make small changes in what they do as well. We’re really excited to be partnering with Urban Reef on the first of our social media competitions as they have already committed to supporting Boscombe to become a Veg Cities high street!

Sustain are encouraging more areas to launch Veg Cities campaigns, and get local businesses and orgnisations making veg pledges. Veg Cities is currently the feature campaign of Sustainable Food Cities, and is run in partnership with Peas Please.
