Plant protein power

A plan for a radical overhaul to Britain's food and farming system makes the case for devoting more land and support to plant proteins. It argues this would represent a four-way win: the food produced would be sustainable, healthy, affordable and ethical.

The Grow Green II report, written by Sustain member the New Economics Foundation and commissioned by the Vegan Society, declares that the UK’s food system is environmentally unsustainable and unhealthy. It calls on the Government to radically rethink the food we eat and the crops we grow, as it prepares to leave the European Union.

Key recommendations include implementation of a farmed animal tax and a Protein Aid Scheme for those who grow plant protein crops such as peas, beans and lentils. Read the full report here.
