Food and packaging recycling made easier

Recyclers, local authorities and waste management companies have at last come together to produce a definitive list of what can and cannot be accepted for recycling at the kerbside.

In the past, recycling rates for food and packaging have been held down because of confusion over what can be put into household recycling bins. The problem was compounded by the fact that the rules varied between different local authorities. The uncertainty meant that many items have been put into general refuse when they could in fact have been recycled.

Now, the recycling charity WRAP has led the development of a unified set of Recycling Guidelines, which should make it easier for households to recycle more across the whole of the UK.

The Guidelines can be used by local authorities and waste producers to ensure their activities align with the recommendations. They can also be consulted by the public here.
