Good news for ecolabels

According to research from the Danish Chamber of Commerce, ecolabels are likely to proliferate in Europe in the coming decades, and will be more influential than legislation

Ecolabels are symbols that appear on packaging to communicate to buyers that products have been certified to meet specific ethical standards. The best known food ecolabels include the Fairtrade, Freedom Foods, Certified Sustainable Seafood and organic labels.

The research found that there are currently around 450 ecolabels, with the number likely to increase to 750 by 2030. The researchers argue that the labels can track consumer concerns with more agility than legislation, which tends to be more cumbersome. They predict that the labels will have to extend the issues they cover to include climate change, food waste and even taxation.
